Sources told the Nation that the siege lasted over two hours, leading many residents to flee into the nearby bushes.

Police spokesman, ASP Sanusi Abubakar, confirmed the attack, saying, “We got a report from the DPO (Divisional Police Officer) who said that security operatives in the local government mobilised immediately to engage the bandits.

“Unfortunately, on sensing our men going after them, the bandits started firing and in the process shot one person. They fled and abandoned their food items and patrol.”

He said the police had launched a manhunt for the assailants.

SaharaReporters had reported on Sunday that some bandits sent a threat message to the residents of border villages in Sokoto State, after invading and killing people in the same area last week.

The bandits last Tuesday and Wednesday wreaked havoc on two local government areas in Sokoto — Dange/Shuni and Tureta — where they killed scores of people and ransacked shops and houses for foodstuffs.

The message by the bandits that they would attack the communities caused apprehension in Shuni, a community in Dange/Shuni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The notice written in Hausa language was found under a tree.

The alleged notice of attack was discovered late on Saturday, under a tree in Kwanar Kimba Village of Shuni District, Dange/Shuni LGA, a resident revealed.

“The notice is written in Hausa language by suspected bandits threatening to destroy the villages of Shuni, Kwanar Kimba, Rikina and Dange, and it has thrown residents into panic,” the source stated.

The writers also boasted in the alleged notification that no force could stop them from carrying out their threat.

“A million army personnel will not stop us from carrying out the attack, which may be carried out any moment from now,” the alleged notice stated.

Some bandits also invaded Rido Gbagyi Maraban Rido community in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Tuesday night, killing one person and abducting five others.

The bandits, who operated unchallenged for over one-and-a-half hours killed Mr Irrimiya Yohanna, a Boys Brigade Officer before whisking away their captives.

Those abducted have been identified as Pastor Peter Chukwuemeka, Mr Bobai Theophilus, Mr Joseph (a driver with Nigerian Breweries), Rev. Daniel Usman and Barmani Yakubu, while one Yusuf Tanko and one  other person sustained bullet wounds.
