Group Accuses Nigeria Police Of Trying To Shield Gun-wielding Thugs Allegedly Loyal To Ex-Ogun Governor, Amosun

A group, Advocacy for Social Justice, has called on the Inspector-General of Police in Nigeria, Usman Alkali Baba, to mandate the Ogun State Police Command to produce an unregistered Hilux van seized from suspected hoodlums.

The vehicle was reportedly found with dangerous weapons, including one English Berretta pistol with no. PT 92 AFS and five live ammunition, and one locally fabricated revolver pistol last Saturday during the congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The group, which accused the police of trying to free the suspects by removing the seized vehicle as evidence against the hoodlums, gave the Ogun State Police Command 24 hours to produce the vehicle or face further action.

ASJ also urged the IGP to show interest in the case to ensure justice was served in the matter involving Mikky Kazeem, an aide to former Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, and the suspected hoodlums allegedly loyal to the serving federal lawmaker.

The suspects include Ibrahim Amoje, Yusuf Azeez, Olaide Sodiq, Adewale Ogundele, Femi Oke, and Balogun Olawale Dhikrullahi.

Upon interrogation, one of the suspects confessed that they were hired by Kazeem, who gave them some ammunition to use to disrupt the congresses last Saturday.

According to the group, the police must be held accountable for the disappearance of the vehicle, which could not have vanished without the connivance of some senior police personnel.

A statement signed by General Secretary of ASJ, Tajudeen Oguntolu, read, “We have it on good authority that a family member of Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Alhaji Okewole, has been on the case and has been deploying resources to set the arrested suspects free and also attempt to compromise the ongoing investigation into the activities of the suspects.

“We, therefore, call on the IGP, Usman Alkali Baba, to show a keen interest in the case and ensure that it is not swept under the carpet.”

An aide of the ex-Ogun State governor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, absolved his boss of any involvement in the matter.

Widespread violence greeted the congress of the APC in Ogun last Saturday to elect executives of the party in the state with two factions holding parallel meetings.

One of the factions is loyal to Governor Dapo Abiodun while Amosun controls the other camp.

The situation has since left the political atmosphere in the state highly tense.
