Armed men suspected to be Fulani herders have killed a 25-year-old man identified as Sheriff Yongo in Adamawa State.
The deceased from Dong in the Demsa Local Government Area of the state was killed by gunmen while returning home from the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN) convention in Numan on March 5.
Yongo was buried on Tuesday, March 8.
Two other persons identified as Gambo Dong and Benedict Paul who managed to escape the attack said that the gunmen laid ambush before Dong village in the night and attacked them while going home after the evening session of the church convention.
“They flashed torchlight at us and staged themselves, group by group, we ran into the bush while Sheriff was caught by the assailants. We waited to see him but to no avail, only to discover his body was macheted, battered and his hand and fingers cut off," Gambo told journalists.
"These brutal killings have been persistent along Dong axis, we lost so many youths and kidnappings have also been on the increase.”
According to Gambo, the late Sheriff was a staff member of a primary health care centre in Dong.
