Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Baba, has condemned the shooting and killing of Mrs Omobolanle Raheem, a lawyer who was allegedly shot and killed by a policeman attached to Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah, Lagos State.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that Raheem was shot dead while she was returning home with her husband from a Christmas service at Ajah Under-bridge.

Ajah is a popular area in Lagos, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

The police officer, now identified as Ayuba, who shot the lawyer on Sunday, Christmas Day, is reportedly attached to Ajiwe Police Station.

SaharaReporters learnt that after killing Omobolanle Raheem, the trigger-happy policeman fled the scene with his colleagues before another set of policemen later came and took her remains to a mortuary in the Yaba area of the state and vanished.

The Lagos command's spokesman SP Benjamin Hundeyin has confirmed the unfortunate incident, adding that the culprit and other policemen with him had been arrested.

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, the Nigerian Police Chief, Usman Baba, described the incident as sad and ordered a speedy investigation and prosecution of the officer(s) responsible for the ugly and unprofessional act.

IGP in a statement issued through the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the unprofessional act of the culprit doesn't portray the Nigeria Police Standard Operating Procedure and core values.

He, however, commiserated with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, while praying for the repose of her soul.

Adejobi quoted the IGP to have assured the general public of justice in the case. He, however, warned officers and men of the Force to be professional and people-oriented in the discharge of their duties and operate within the ambit of the law.

He warned that the Force's leadership would not condone any inappropriate or unprofessional acts.
