The groups reminded Nigerians that all the elections play a crucial role in determining the quality of life within their communities.

A survey carried out by civic tech organisations, EiE Nigeria and SBM Intelligence, has called on Nigerian electorates to show significant interest in all levels of elections in the country.

The group which fosters courtroom openness, advancing social justice and promoting quality reminded Nigerians that all the elections play a crucial role in determining the quality of life within their communities.

EiE – SBM who stated this in a statement issued on Wednesday, noted that since 1999 Nigerians after the presidential election always had declining interest in down ballot elections such as governors and house of assembly elections.

According to the report, “presidential elections are always 100 per cent; while governorship has been 34.53 per cent; Senate 19.86 per cent. The House of Representatives and State House of Assembly have always been 16.75 and 14.24 per cent respectively.

“Most citizens are focused on the presidential election, owing to the power arrogated to the centre by the 1999 Constitution. Citizens must recognise the significance of these other levels of elections as they play a crucial role in determining the quality of life within their communities,” the group stated.

The civic tech organisation disclosed that on Friday, February 17, it would publish its 2023 election forecast. “We asked questions about the various elections. One thing that jumped out is the declining interest in down ballot elections.”
