Anyanwu emerged as the party’s candidate following its primary election held on Wednesday, SaharaReporters learnt.

Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party has emerged as the party’s governorship candidate for the next governorship election in Imo State.

Anyanwu emerged as the party’s candidate following its primary election held on Wednesday, SaharaReporters learnt.

It was however learnt that the state PDP chairman, Charles Ugwu and former Governor of the state Emeka Ihedioha were absent at the primary election held at the party’s secretariat along Okigwe Road in Owerri, the state capital ahead of the November 11, 2023 governorship election.

Channels TV reports that the PDP’s State Organising Secretary, Lawrence Biado, said the seven-man electoral panel constituted by the National Working Committee headed by Kenneth Okon was present in Imo to monitor the primary election.

According to Biado, though the primary election is a consensus arrangement with the National Secretary of the party, with Samuel Anyanwu as the sole contestant, about 942 delegates from the 27 local government areas of the state were expected to vote in line with the Electoral Act 2022 to affirm that the delegates were in agreement with the consensus arrangement.

As Ihedioha pulled out from the PDP governorship race a few weeks ago, Anyanwu or any other PDP governorship candidate in the state will challenge the reelection of Governor Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In January 2020, a seven-man panel of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Tanko Muhammad sacked Ihedioha as the governor of Imo State after barely seven months in office and unanimously declared Uzodinma as the winner of the March 19, 2019 governorship election in the state.
