He stated that poverty and insecurity were top priorities for his government and that he would go to any length to overcome them.

President Bola Tinubu has asked the European Union to help Nigeria and other African states improve security and economic growth in order to relieve poverty on the continent.

He made the call during a phone chat with Mr Charles Michel, President of the European Council, on Wednesday.

The European Council is the organisation that establishes the basic political direction and priorities of the European Union.

According to Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information, President Tinubu asked the EU to address the continent's soaring poverty, saying this would mean a collaboration of allies and development partners such as the EU.

While proposing that the EU investigates particular areas of security concerns, such as Lake Chad and coastal areas, Nigeria's president said his country was committed to maintain interaction with the European Union and other member nations.

He stated that poverty and insecurity were top priorities for his government and that he would go to any length to overcome them.

The Council president took advantage of the phone call to congratulate President Tinubu on his election.

He emphasised the importance of Nigeria to the EU and the international community while reiterating the Council's commitment to deeper collaboration and engagement with Nigeria based on mutual respect and common interests.

Michel asked the Nigerian president to continue collaborating with the EU in all relevant areas.
