Some Of My Mates Who Graduated With Me 16 Years Ago Still Jobless —Nigerian Senator

The federal lawmaker promised to introduce programmes to enhance youth employment and empowerment to address the problem of unemployment in his constituency.

Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has lamented the heartbreaking high rate of unemployment in the country.

Senator Nwebonyi who is the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation and Water Resources, while speaking at a news conference in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital on Monday said that some of his mate who graduated with him 16 years ago are still looking for jobs as they have remained unemployed since their graduation from the university.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Nwebonyi as saying, “We are going to tackle unemployment. I graduated 16 years ago, but some of my mates are still looking for jobs till now.’’

The federal lawmaker promised to introduce programmes to enhance youth employment and empowerment to address the problem of unemployment in his constituency.

In April, an Audit, Tax and Advisory Services organisation, KPMG stated that the Nigerian unemployment rate had increased to 37.7 percent in 2022. 

This is from the 33.3 percent recorded in 2020. 

It was projected that it would further rise to 40.6 percent due to the continuing inflow of job seekers into the job market with rapid dwindling job opportunities.

The multinational consulting firm, in its report titled ‘KPMG Global Economy Outlook report, H1 2023, said unemployment would continue to be a major challenge in 2023 due to the limited investment by the private sector, low industrialisation, among other issues.
