Indigenous Religion Practitioners File Complaint With Nigeria Police Over Alleged Plan By Muslim Fanatics To Provoke Religious Violence In Kwara
Some practitioners of indigenous religions in Nigeria have submitted a complaint to the police over an alleged plan by some hoodlums suspected to be Muslim fanatics, to cause trouble on the premises of Kwara State Upper Area Court.
According to them, the moment chosen by the Muslim fanatics is during the trial of one of their members, Adegbola Abdulazeez, also known as Tani Olohun.
This was made known to SaharaReproters by some of the Isese practitioners who were at the court on Monday.
“The fanatics were following us. Even till our lawyers addressed us, they were fully on the ground and hung around so that they could attack but we moved en masse to the nearest police headquarters to file a complaint about it, which we have submitted,” one of them disclosed.
Addressing the Isese practitioners after Tani Olohun’s case at the State Chief Magistrate Court on Tuesday, one of his lawyers, in a video obtained by SaharaReporters, commended the practitioners for the way they carried themselves despite the intimidation and threats from the hoodlums on Monday.
The lawyer said, “Our argument before the court is that the case before it is already at the other court.
“But the judge did not agree. He said his case came first. He said the case before him was filed on the 11th of August and that he was the one who ordered that he should be brought from Ibadan, and they said they claimed to have jurisdiction over the trial.
“Then we applied for his bail and they gave us a date to file our application. What they wanted to happen yesterday did not happen.”
Speaking further on the possibility of securing Tani Olohun’s bail at the next adjourned date, the lawyer said, “That is why we can call them ‘my lord’. They have power. It is the law that gave them. They can decide to tell us to bring two sureties who have houses and other properties in Ilorin for bail that have houses in Ilorin and they can grant him bail immediately, what we call bench ruling.
“It can happen. They have the power. They may also tell you to come on the second day to get a ruling. What is more important is the Tuesday, the 19th, let’s secure his bail. It is when we secure his bail on the 19th (at the Magistrate Court) and on the 20th, that we can tell the court (Upper Area Court) that the other court granted him bail yesterday and we have perfected it.”
