SaharaReporters reported on Saturday that Nnanyereugo who was declared wanted by Lagos State Police Command for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Augusta Osedion, was arrested and detained in Freetown, Sierra Leone on Friday.

The Sierra Leone police have said they are working to extradite Best Nnanyereugo Benjamin – who fled Nigeria to Sierra Leone after allegedly killing his girlfriend – to his home country.

SaharaReporters reported on Saturday that Nnanyereugo who was declared wanted by Lagos State Police Command for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Augusta Osedion, was arrested and detained in Freetown, Sierra Leone on Friday.

Augusta Osedion, a 21-year-old undergraduate student of Lead University, Ibadan, Oyo State was allegedly killed on July 13, 2023, in their residence at Oral Estate, Ikota in Ajah, Lagos.

A statement signed by the Media and Public Relations Department of Sierra Leone Police Headquarters in Freetown on Saturday, also confirmed the arrest.

It reads, “The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) is pleased to inform the general public that following a request it received from the National Central Bureau (NCB) of Nigeria, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Sierra Leone Police, on Friday 20th October, 2023, arrested one Best Benjamin Nnanyereugo, a Nigerian national at Leads Hotel, situated at Aberdeen in Freetown.

“Suspect Best Benjamin Nnanyereugo who is currently in custody, is a declared wanted person in Nigeria and is since being pursued by the Nigerian police, for allegedly killing his 21 years old girlfriend Augusta Onuwabhagbe Osedion, before escaping the country.

“In view thereof, the police leadership would like to apprise the public that the National Central Bureau (NCB) of Sierra Leone is meanwhile working with the attorney general's office to make arrangements for his extradition to Nigeria so that he could face justice for his alleged crime(s).”

The mother of the deceased, Mrs Cordelia Okonye, in a Facebook post on Saturday, stated that after the unfortunate incident, she pleaded with Nnanyereugo, also known as Killaboi, to turn himself in but he fled.

She said, “So what I did, I sent his passport photographs to all my relatives, friends, and family across the globe and told them he has a tattoo that identifies him.

“So along the line, my cousin in Sierra Leone on the first hinted to me that ‘I saw somebody like him. Immediately, my son and a cousin went to Sierra Leone. A day before my son and cousin got to Sierra Leone, they declared Killaboi wanted. He was already hiding in the country.

“The commissioner of police was contacted. Killaboi killed my daughter and left her corpse to rot before taking her phone."

Mrs Okonye also said that Nnanyereugo used a fake name to secure a Sierra Leonean passport 15 days after he murdered her daughter.
