How Nigerian Police Drag Investigation, Fail To Arrest Lagos Rape Suspect Since April
November 27, 2023

The victim told SaharaReporters in an account that the matter was reported to the Alakuko Police Station, adding that the suspect allegedly raped her inside her father’s house.

The Lagos State command of the Nigeria Police Force has continued to drag its investigation into an alleged rape case involving a woman (name withheld) against a man identified as Farooq Ishola on the 10th of April, 2023.

The victim told SaharaReporters in an account that the matter was reported to the Alakuko Police Station, adding that the suspect allegedly raped her inside her father’s house.

She noted that all efforts to ensure that the police prosecuted him (Ishola) for the alleged crime had proved abortive.

The suspect’s family lived at Yusuf-Akinde Estate, Dalemo, Alakuko in Lagos.

When the family of the victim got across to the Family Support Unit department of the Alakuko police station in Lagos State, they were told that the police could not do anything on the case because the suspect had left Lagos after the incident happened in April.

The victim narrated that it all started the day she felt sick and decided to treat herself.

She said, “Only I and my youngest brother was around, he was preoccupied with a kid show and was going to follow me to the chemist too while I dressed up.

“After I was ready to go I reached out to my neighbor that he would come and we would head out together. A few minutes passed and my brother came to inform me that a man was looking for me at the kitchen door. I instinctively thought it was my neighbor.

“I went to the door to open but was taken aback when it was someone else. It was Farooq Ishola (I got to know the surname at the police station). I was shocked.

“He pushed me into the house and was telling me how much he loved me. I told him that I was headed out and he should not even come to my parent’s house.

“I felt so helpless in that moment. He grabbed me by the waist and began removing my trouser and pants. I told him I was feeling sick, but he refused to listen, pinned me to the floor and had forceful sex with me.

“My dad kept calling my phone but he took my phone from me and was dragging me out of my compound. My neighbour later came but Farooq claimed I was his girlfriend and we had just had a misunderstanding.

“I didn't go to the pharmacy again my neighbour tried stabilising me until I was calm enough to call my dad and relate to him what had happened.”

The victim added that her father immediately rushed to the suspect’s house but he was nowhere to be found and this led to the arrest of his mother.

She continued, “I was taken to Lagos State University teaching hospital by my dad but it was late I had to spend the night at the hospital and the next day being April 11, I was attended to at Mirabel Centre from where I was directed to go to FSU Department of the Alakuko police station.

“On the 12th of April I reported at the station with my dad, the suspect’s mother was picked and she said Farooq had relocated to Ibadan, Oyo State, and up till now, the case has stood still. We were told to report or contact the station anytime we sight him in the vicinity.”

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters could not get the State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, to comment on the incident.

When contacted, the Investigating Police Officer at the Alakuko Police Station confirmed that the case was brought to the station as claimed by the victim.

“I am busy now. You could call me later,” she added in a text message.
