A copy of an impeachment letter signed by 18 members of the House and obtained by SaharaReporters on Tuesday reads in part: “Consequent upon the gross misconduct of Mr Speaker which borders on highhandedness, lack of focus and transparency, arrogance and poor leadership style, financial misappropriation and inciting members against themselves.
“Sequel to the gross misconduct above mentioned and in consonance with section 92 (2)(C) of the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria and Order 11 of the Standing rule of the House of Assembly, we the undersigned duly elected members of the 10" Assembly of Ogun State House of Assembly move for the impeachment of Mr Speaker, Rt Hon. Olakunle Taiwo Oluomo with immediate effect.”
The lawmakers had swiftly also announced Oludaisi Elemide as the new Speaker of the House of Assembly.
Speaking with the Daily Post on what pushed the 18 lawmakers to decide on Oluomo’s impeachment, Mr Soneye Damilola Kayode, who represents Obafemi Owode Constituency, claimed that the former Speaker had been collecting money on their behalf from the state governor without informing them.
He added that Oluomo kept inciting members against one another to create a division in the House and avoid being held accountable for the money he allegedly embezzled.
“We never wanted him, but the leadership of the party thought he was a former Speaker, so we should allow him to continue as a speaker. We all agreed as faithful party persons,” Soneye was quoted by Daily Post as saying.
He continued: “Now the situation is: Oluomo will go everywhere; he will come to us as members and tell us the governor has not approved for us any money, the governor has not given us any money, and that we should manage.
“We keep managing. We later found out that the governor had been giving us money. He takes a memo to the governor, the governor gives him money, and he comes back to tell us he did not give him any money.
“Let me give you a good example of this: the quarters allowance. When we came back, the governor gave us money for renovation. Oluomo took the remaining one and embezzled it.
“Now, 18 of us came together and said we cannot be the same. How can we manage our future? He keeps inciting members against each other. This is so bad we cannot take it anymore.
“We have now changed the leadership of the House. The House is now under the leadership of Hon Elemide and we remain the same. He (Oluomo) should go and clear his name with the EFCC.”
