At least 18 shops were razed by an inferno that was caused by a gas tanker on Tuesday night at Agbado Road, Iju Ishaga, Lagos State.

A press statement issued by Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said the fire incident started around 10pm after a gas tanker "accidentally caught Fire and accompanied with an explosion."

The statement added the fire later moved to the other side of the street with the aid of one of the gas cylinders located there.

The statement said: “The situation is now calm as the fire is under control and further explosion halted as dampening down ongoing to mop up the scene of the incident.

“The cause of the emergency is attributed to the off-loading of six numbers of 75-50(kg) gas cylinders sizes from a stationed mini truck to a gas shop that accidentally resulted to explosions from one of the compromised head cap of a cylinder accompanied by Fire.

“The ensuing Fire triggered to the other side of the street with the aid of one of the gas cylinders that travelled over affecting 18 shops in all and contents therein with the mini truck.

“There is no traces of casualty nor injury as the operations moved towards conclusion.”

This incident came barely one day after the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed a fire outbreak at, Ikate-Elegushi, in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that the fire emanated from one of the shanty rooms, and subsequently escalated to other rooms, then adjoining buildings within the estate in the area.

LASEMA disclosed this on Monday in a statement signed by Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, noting that it activated the State Emergency Response Plans after receiving distress calls via it's Toll Free Emergency numbers around 11: 21pm on Sunday.
