SaharaReporters gathered that the women were arrested at Jakpa Junction, in Effurun, Uvwie local government area of the state.

A 68-year-old woman with a medical history and eight others have reportedly spent over four days in police detention in Delta State for protesting against the economic hardship in Nigeria.

SaharaReporters gathered that the women were arrested at Jakpa Junction, in Effurun, Uvwie local government area of the state.

A Delta-based activist, Comrade Israel Joe who confirmed the arrest to SaharaReporters, said the women were arrested for no reason other than for seeking justice for the society.

Joe was also arrested during a protest in the state last week but he was later released.

He said, "When the people of Effurun and Warri heard I had been arrested by the military and later handed over to the police for further prosecution, they went on to protest my release at Jakpa Junction, which led to the police arresting nine persons, including aged women with medical history.

"Since Friday, 23rd February, these persons have been kept in a cell at Ekpan Police station, including aged women and a lady in her 60s. What are their offences outside peacefully protesting for a better future for their children and society?

"I wish to convene my dissatisfaction with your agency for the staggering abnormalities you have made of yourself, in a quest to gag Nigerians to a corner for genuinely dramatising their fundamental right, to air out their grievances in the face of injustice, hunger, poverty and economic hardship.

"The Delta State Command of the police has promised to look into it and release these persons but we have entered Day 4 and they are still being detained with no reasons other than seeking justice for society.

"I humbly wish to remind the police force that we are all in this hardship together. At your retirement, you would come back to society to join us in the mess you willfully allowed back in service.

"I am appealing to the command to release these nine persons, and I'm ready to turn myself in for the police to detain me, instead of keeping these innocent citizens in their detention for no reason.”

The spokesperson for the state police command, Bright Edafe, also confirmed the arrest to SaharaReporters.

He said the women threw stones at the police during the protest.

"They were violent during the protest; violent protest is illegal. They threw stones at policemen, which is not allowed during any protest.

"They will be charge to court today," he added.
