They also accused their superiors led by one Lieutenant Colonel Obi of diverting their feeding allowance.

Nigerian soldiers under the Joint Security Task Force, Operation Safe Haven deployed to end the killings and security challenges in Plateau State have alleged they are not being properly fed.

They also accused their superiors led by one Lieutenant Colonel Obi of diverting their feeding allowance.

The Nigerian Army recently increased the monthly food allowance per head for soldiers to N1,500 daily due to a hike in the price of foodstuffs in the market.

The soldiers however revealed further that despite the increment of budgetary allocation, their superiors continued to feed them with ‘meals not fit for a dog’.

“We Nigerian soldiers deployed under Mangu Local Government, Plateau State to make peace in the Local Government Area are not being properly fed despite the increase of the feeding allowance by the Nigerian Army headquarters,” one of them told SaharaReporters.

“The feeding allowance was usually paid in cash to the soldiers right from time but due to self-interest, our superiors led by the commander stopped the payment directly and decided to start cooking for us.

“He keeps on threatening us (soldiers) that we can only grumble, we can’t report him,” another source said.

When SaharaReporters contacted the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, he simply said, “I will get back when I’m able to confirm your claims.”

Scores of killings have been recorded in Plateau recently with most of the attacks by gunmen occurring in the Mangu area of the state.

On July 11, 2023, President Bola Tinubu directed security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the killings and violence in Plateau.

The President strongly condemned the recent killings in Mangu and said the country must break the cycle of violence.

However, the killings have persisted and seem to have defied all odds.
