The Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State command, has refused to comply with a subsisting ruling of the High Court in Ikeja which ordered the immediate release of Ayotunde Richard, a gospel singer and former member of Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries (MFM) from detention.

However, SaharaReporters earlier reported that the High Court in Lagos State on Friday ruled that the prolonged detention of Richard was not justified and therefore asked the police to release him immediately.

Ayotunde Richards had also filed a suit against the General Overseer of the church, Pastor Olukoya, over an alleged breach of his fundamental human rights.

Other respondents in the case are; Davison Olaniran Adejuwon Esq; Superintendent of Police Tawose Ayoleyi Ajayi and the Nigeria Police Force.

Olukoya, Davidson, Ajayi and the Nigeria Police Force are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Respondents respectively.

Giving an update on the case, Richard’s wife revealed that the police mentioned that they would not comply with the court ruling because they felt Richard was safer in their custody than if granted freedom.

"Within our premises, he is safe but once he is released, he is no longer safe,” a police source was quoted telling the wife.

The police source added that his life would be put in danger if he was allowed to leave their custody as ordered by the court.

His lawyer, Adeshina Ogunlana, had also confirmed that the police was planning to charge him before a Federal High Court on Monday.
