The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Plateau State, Prof. Tanko Ishaya has broken the gate of the university locked by protesting non-teaching staff members of the Nigerian university.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the non-teaching staff under the aegis of the Senior Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), had begun a one-week strike on Monday over alleged unfair treatment and disparity in the payment of their salaries by the Nigerian Government.

SaharaReporters earlier reported how the vice president of the association, Dr Abdussobuur Salaam disclosed that they would soon embark on a warning strike during a telephone conversation with SaharaReporters last Monday.

Salaam revealed that the decision to embark on the strike was taken after a resolution at the union's National Executive Council (NEC) meeting which was held two weeks ago.

However, the protesting staff members of the University of Jos locked the school gate with a padlock to ground academic activities in the school.

But in a video shared with SaharaReporters on Monday afternoon, the vice chancellor is seen arriving with armed policemen, who broke the gate to gain entrance into the school.

The workers are seen in the video chanting and singing solidarity songs while the vice-chancellor goes back to his car and drives in.
