Nigeria Football Federation has appointed Finidi George as the interim coach of the country’s senior football team, Super Eagles.

George is a former Super Eagles player and coach of Enyimba FC of Aba.

He was a well-decorated player who made a name for himself at Ajax in the Netherlands, which won eight major titles, including the 1995 Champions League.

He played for several years in Spain with Real Betis and had a brief spell in England before retiring.

Finidi was an important member of the Nigeria team during the 1990s, appearing in two World Cups.

This was announced on X via the team’s verified handle, adding that Finidi George is saddled with the task of leading the team for their two forthcoming matches against Ghana and Mali.

Finidi’s appointment came barely three weeks after Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, who led the team to the final of the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, left the position.

Finidi was an assistant coach during the two-year reign of Peseiro.

On his debut in 1991, George, who also played for Calabar Rovers and Sharks FC in Nigeria before moving to Europe, scored one goal and assisted four others for legendary Rashidi Yekini.

He also helped the latter score Nigeria's first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against Bulgaria in Dallas, USA on June 19, 1994.
