The G7 leaders have condemned Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel.

SaharaReporters reported earlier on Sunday that Iran launched a wave of drone and missile attacks toward Israel on Saturday night, running into Sunday morning.

Tehran accused Israel of carrying out an airstrike on its consulate in the Syrian capital of Damascus earlier this month that killed seven officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, including two high-ranking generals.

Israel stuck to its usual policy of silence on extraterritorial assassinations but is widely believed to have been behind the attack.

The Israeli military claimed to have intercepted 99% of the incoming projectiles.

But arising from a meeting on Sunday regarding the development, the Group of Seven reaffirmed their commitment to Israel's security.

The Group of Seven or G7 is an intergovernmental political and economic forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Additionally, the European Union is a "non-enumerated member"

This is contained in a statement the White House published on its website after the meeting on Sunday.

It said, "We, the Leaders of the G7, unequivocally condemn in the strongest terms Iran’s direct and unprecedented attack against Israel. Iran fired hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel. Israel, with the help of its partners, defeated the attack.

"We express our full solidarity and support to Israel and its people and reaffirm our commitment towards its security."

The leaders, however, accused Iran of provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation with the attack.

"With its actions, Iran has further stepped toward the destabilization of the region and risks provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation. This must be avoided. We will continue to work to stabilize the situation and avoid further escalation.

"In this spirit, we demand that Iran and its proxies cease their attacks, and we stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilizing initiatives.

"We will also strengthen our cooperation to end the crisis in Gaza, including by continuing to work towards an immediate and sustainable ceasefire and the release of hostages by Hamas, and deliver increased humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in need."
