It is the sixth time the country has experienced such a collapse in 2024.

Nigeria has again experienced a nationwide power outage after the power grid collapsed early Monday morning.

It is the sixth time the country has experienced such a collapse in 2024.

SaharaReporters learnt that economic activities in South-East Nigeria were grounded on Monday following the collapse.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC), which disclosed the collapse of the national grid in a statement on Monday morning, revealed that system collapse occurred at 2:41 a.m. on Monday.

Titled: "Notice Of Total System Collapse," the statement signed by EEDC's Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, appealed to its Customers in the five states of South-East for understanding, while waiting for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to restore power supply.

The statement partly read: "The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) wishes to inform her esteemed customers of a total system collapse which occurred at 2:41am today, 15th April, 2024.

"This resulted in the loss of supply to all our interface TCN stations. Consequently, we were unable to provide service to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.

"However, the situation is gradually being resolved as we received supply at Awada TCN station, Onitsha, at 7:30am.

"We are in constant communication with the relevant authorities awaiting full restoration of supply by the National Control Centre, NCC, Oshogbo.”

SaharaReporters had reported how electricity distribution companies announced the collapse of the grid in February.

“The Management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) wishes to inform its valued customers that the power outage being experienced is as a result of a system failure from the national grid at 11:21 hours today, 4th February 2024 which has led to a nationwide power outage.

“Be rest assured that we are working with the relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized. We appeal for your patience.” the statement signed by the AEDC management read.

In September 2023, the TCN reported a total of 46 grid collapses in the country between 2017 and 2022.

In 2017 and 2018, there were 15 and 12 grid collapses respectively.

There were nine grid collapses in 2019, four in 2020 and two in 2021. In 2022, there were four grid collapses.
