The University of Southern California (USC) has cancelled the commencement of its main-stage graduation ceremony at Alumni Park following the pro-Palestine protest that is said to have turned violent at the school.

The cancellation of the graduation ceremony which is said to typically have over 60,000 people in attendance, was due to "security threats".

This comes one week after valedictorian Asna Tabassum was told she would not be delivering the traditional speech following a reported opposition by pro-Israel groups.

The school said, "We understand that this is disappointing," adding that the new safety measures in place this year, such as additional screening procedures, will increase the processing time for guests "substantially."

It was gathered that on April 15, the USC Provost, Andrew T. Guzman, sent out an email, saying the school was facing threats, and that attacks were of an "alarming tenor" and "escalated to the point of creating substantial risks relating to security and disruption at commencement."

The school in an update quoted by Reuters said that "As a result, we will not be able to host the main stage ceremony that traditionally brings 65,000 students, families, and friends to our campus all at the same time."

SaharaReporters on Thursday reported that no fewer than 150 pro-Palestine protesters were arrested in locations across the United States, as protests against the war in Gaza intensified across university campuses.

At least 93 people had earlier been arrested at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and were taken into custody on trespassing charges.

Authorities said 34 people were arrested when the protesters and police also clashed at the University of Texas in Austin.

Universities across the US have seen a growing number of students walk out of class or try to set up encampments to protest against Israel's military campaign in Gaza.
