U.S. State Department Arabic Language Spokesperson Resigns ‘In Opposition To Gaza Policy’

The Arabic language spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, Hala Rharrit, has resigned.

Rharrit cited her opposition to Washington's policy concerning the war in Gaza. She held the position for one and nine months.

Hala Rharrit in a post on LinkedIn wrote, “I’m a peacemaker. Extensive experience in foreign relations, political affairs, economic development, and countering violent extremism.

“Former American diplomat, who served around the world, including throughout the Middle East, Hong Kong, and South Africa.

“I resigned April 2024 after 18 years of distinguished service in opposition to the United States' Gaza policy. Diplomacy, not arms. Be a force for peace and unity.”

Rharrit was also the Dubai Regional Media Hub's deputy director. He joined the State Department almost two decades ago as a political and human rights officer.

In March, Annelle Sheline, 38, resigned as a foreign affairs officer in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. She wrote in an article for CNN that she was "unable to serve an administration that enables such atrocities”.

In January, Tariq Habash, a senior Education Department official resigned, citing President Joe Biden's response to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

In October 2023, a State Department official, Josh Paul, resigned saying, “We cannot be both against occupation, and for it. We cannot be both for freedom, and against it. And we cannot be for a better world, while contributing to one that is materially worse.”
