Sowore, while reacting to a video trending on social media showing how Babayomi and other members of the AAC party were arrested and handcuffed by the police officers during the Saturday’s local government election in the state, demanded full-scale sanctions against the police officers involved.

Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 and 2023 general elections, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned in the strongest terms, the brutal physical and violent assault of the Oyo State Chairman of the party, Kayode Babayomi, by officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

Sowore, while reacting to a video trending on social media showing how Babayomi and other members of the AAC party were arrested and handcuffed by the police officers during the Saturday’s local government election in the state, demanded full-scale sanctions against the police officers involved.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that Babayomi was detained by the state Commissioner of Police after he was arrested while monitoring the ongoing council election in the state.

The local government election which was held across the state, has been widely fraught with irregularities.

SaharaReporters was told that "The AAC Oyo state chair, Babayomi, has been arrested and detained at the Sanyo police station while on election duty.

"He was arrested at Ward one, Unit 15, J Nissi area."

"This is particularly planned because at the same polling unit, the Oyo State electoral commission deliberately brought wrong ballot papers, despite coming late."

SaharaReporters gathered that the AAC chairman was taken directly to the Commissioner of Police’s office in the state and he is presently being detained there without being told in clear terms his offence.

Reacting to the incident, Sowore in a post on his X platform handle said, “These @policeng officers are the brutes sent out by Oyo State Gov @seyiamakinde to ensure the local government elections today are rigged for him.

“You could see a @policeng officer in this video physically assaulting the @aacparty chairman in Oyo state, @Apostlekay7 after he was handcuffed.

“This outright act of cruelty is unacceptable, and this 1960-era officer must be penalized immediately. The state electoral commissions are the worst.”
