A total of 135 Palestinian journalists have been killed by the Israeli Army in the ongoing war in Gaza, an official has said.

This was stated in a press statement issued on Friday by Abdullah Abu Shawest, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Nigeria to celebrate World Press Freedom.

The statement added that about 100 journalists were being detained by the Israeli military while four of them were missing.

The statement reads: “On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day on May 3, the Embassy of the State of Palestine to the Federal Republic of Nigeria wishes all Nigerian media correspondents and workers a happy World Press Freedom Day, filled with joy, security and success in your careers.

“In this connection, it is worth mentioning that UNESCO awarded the Palestinian press correspondents covering the Israeli genocidal war in Gaza the 2024 UNESCO Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize for their brave and courageous work.

“It is noted that the Israeli Occupation Army killed 135 press correspondents, detained another 100, with 45 of them under administrative detention, and 4 of them are still missing.”

A former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Friday also said that the sacrifices made by journalists who had paid the ultimate price in the battle to enthrone and sustain democracy and for a better society would not be in vain.

He acknowledged the challenges and threats faced by journalists in the country.

Atiku made this known in a statement posted on his X account on Friday in celebration of #WorldPressFreedomDay.
