May 8, 2024

SaharaReporters reported on Tuesday that acting on the orders of the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the police kept Ojukwu in detention despite meeting his bail condition.

#RevolutionNow convener Omoyele Sowore has called on Nigerians to join a protest against the continued detention of Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) detained by the Nigeria Police Force since last week.

SaharaReporters reported on Tuesday that acting on the orders of the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the police kept Ojukwu in detention despite meeting his bail condition.

However, Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 and 2019 elections has called on the police authorities to release the journalist immediately.

He wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account: "#FreeDanielOjwuku tomorrow at the @PoliceNG HQ in Abuja.” He also posted a flyer announcing the peaceful protest to call for the release of the journalist.

The protest will start at the Police Headquarters, Louis Edet House in Abuja by 9 am on Thursday.

SaharaReporters had reported that Ojukwu was arrested in Lagos on Wednesday, May 1 and transferred to Abuja on Sunday, May 5.

The journalist is being investigated by the National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) for alleged Cybercrime violation following a petition from Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to then-President Muhammadu Buhari.

The petition was written on her behalf by a former National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress, Muiz Banire (SAN).

Daniel, who is asthmatic, has been languishing in custody at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Area 10 without access to his medication and doctor.
