The Deputy Coordinator of NANS Southwest, Comrade Taiwo Owolewa, on Thursday told journalists that some of the NANS members were unjustly arrested during a peaceful protest at the Ibadan Zonal Headquarters of the EFCC.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone has condemned the arrest of its members by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

The Deputy Coordinator of NANS Southwest, Comrade Taiwo Owolewa, on Thursday told journalists that some of the NANS members were unjustly arrested during a peaceful protest at the Ibadan Zonal Headquarters of the EFCC.

Owolewa, while addressing journalists in Ekiti State, demanded immediate and unconditional release of the arrested students.

He maintained that it is lawful for students to exercise their fundamental right and peacefully assemble themselves to protest against any form of intimidation, victimisation and oppression from any quarters.

He noted that “This blatant violation of their rights is a clear attempt to silence dissenting voices and stifle citizens' right to hold those in power accountable.

“We demand the immediate and unconditional release of our comrades and call on the EFCC to respect the rights of citizens to peaceful protest and freedom of expression. We will continue to mobilise and exercise our rights until justice is served.”
