The eight travellers kidnapped by gunmen in Kogi State while they were on their way from Kabba to Lokoja earlier in February 2024, have regained their freedom after spending eight days in their abductors' custody.

SaharaReporters had reported that the travellers were ambushed and kidnapped in Oshokoshoko, along the Kabba/Obajana/Lokoja Road in Kogi State by gunmen earlier this month while on their way to Lokoja, the state capital.

The incident happened around 4.30 pm on Saturday, February 17. The victims comprised two women, four men and two students.

A member of the People with Disabilities (PWDs), Kogi State chapter, Elupo Eliazer, lamented that his wife and son were among the victims.

He said that the abductors had called and demanded a ransom of N30 million and that after negotiation and appeals, the amount was reduced to N2.6 million.

But a source close to the victims who spoke on condition of anonymity told SaharaReporters on Monday that the victims were freed by their abductors at about 10 pm on Saturday after an undisclosed substantial amount of money was paid as ransom to the kidnappers.

The source said, "They were released around 10 pm after a substantial sum of money was paid as ransom. They have been reunited with their families.”
