The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Ekaette Obot, sentenced Effiong to one-month in prison on July 27, for alleged contempt of court after the lawyer objected to the presence of two armed police operatives inside the courtroom.

This was revealed in a video published by Moses Olafare, the Ooni of Ife's Director of Media and Publicity.

Speaking from his hospital bed, the victim, a student of the Performing Arts Department, stated that he was with two of his friends when they were approached by police officers who ordered them to enter their vehicle.

The court sitting in the Ajah area of Lagos State had remanded him at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre for allegedly assaulting a police officer.
